ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER……MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND…..

I have several local shows over the next two weeks that I really have very few details about as of this moment…..two days in Stafford, TX this weekend and then back here in Houston next weekend……but for the last week of May and over the Memorial Day Weekend, I will be in Louisville, KY for nearly 10 days for the ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER Festival which is celebrating their 10th year anniversary as the World’s largest Beatles band festival…….Beatles Tribute acts from all over the world will be appearing for 7 days straight and I will be there working for LP Productions doing audio on several of the stages mixing FOH and Monitors throughout the week long event….

DAY TWO….2011 HOUSTON I-FEST….STAGE CHANGE..??!!

At the end of day one of the Houston 2011 I-Fest, we of course covered all the gear in plastic to protect it from possible rain or morning dew moisture…….so on day two, of the Houston 2011 I-Fest, I showed up about 90 minutes earlier than I was scheduled too to uncover the gear and check the system providing me some extra time to get everything in order before the days bands started to show up……I got the rig uncovered, and the mics put back out on the stands by 8:30 AM…….THEN MY CELL PHONE RANG……..

It was Kat Harris with LD Systems who was heading up the production tent on the show sites that was overseeing all the festival stages……..Her first question for me……”How well do you know the Yamaha PM5D Digital Console?”……. I informed her that I knew it well, and she then informed me that they had carted off Alan Van Dyke in an ambulance from FOH of the World Stage (the main festival stage) who had went into diabetic shock……..so she was now moving me off the monitor desk of the Louisiana Stage and was putting me at FOH of the World Stage…….so off I went……

Once I arrived at the main festival stage, Jack at the monitor desk brought me up to speed quickly and I went out to FOH……

I ended up mixing FOH for the first act (some Indian act that was very interesting with all the exotic acoustic instruments)……..then I ended up giving a ton of PM5D Digital Console lessons for the engineer of the second act who had never used the desk before…….he did a great job with my help and his great act from Uzbekistan with a ton of world class performers and instrumentalists sounded amazing……..

Then of course we really got the stage and the festival rockin with an amazing set from blues man KEB MOE……I was completely blown away by his set…….great blues numbers with slot of really humorous songs…….

Then…..blues great ROBERT CRAY hit the stage and he really had the crowd in the palm of his hands during his incredible set…….then we got Usama Bin Ladin…….what a great day……..me at FOH on the LD Systems big rig on the main stage of the I-Fest, great music, big crowds, great people watching……AND we got Bin Ladin……..it was a fantastic day…….it does not get much better than that………..

GET BETTER ALAN…..!!

DAY ONE……2011 HOUSTON I-FEST……

I prepped the rig Thursday and loaded it in and set it up on the Louisiana Stage of the 2011 Houston I-Fest on Friday for LD Systems……once i fired up the rig, one of the monitor amp racks had an issue with channel two of the top amp of the bi-amped mix of mix two…….channel two of the amp kept going into protect and then it healed itself after about 5 minutes…….then the top BSS FDS320 crossover in that amp rack just up and died……both the high and low channels in both channel 1 and channel 2 went into protect…….had another amp rack delivered and it corrected the problem…….

I then showed up Saturday morning on day one of the festival and almost immediately had another gear issue……this time with the split…….the spit would output all the input channels to FOH but would not output any of the channels to the monitor desk…..after some rerouting and troubleshooting, it was determined that the ISO transformer in the split had failed and would not output any of the input channels to the monitor side of the split…….luckily for me my stage boxes on that stage had “thru” XLR outputs on every input channel, so I ran a ton of mic cables from the stage boxes to the inputs of the monitor desk on the input channels I needed to make the monitor rig work to get thru the first act of the day until another replacement split arrived from the shop…….it was not pretty….but it worked…..once the replacement split arrived, I re-attached the original cabling and all was right with the world……I got thru the rest of the day without any other issues and all the Cajun an Zydeco bands were great……..I also got the work with Gary Moore who was Stage Managing the stage and we had a fine afternoon and evening……Gary is also one hell of a talent buyer and booking agent and also manages JESSE DAYTON……it’s always a pleasure working with Gary……..I also worked that day with Dave Hartung…….he was doing FOH on the Louisiana Stage and it was great working with him again…….I originally had met Dave many years ago in the early 90’s when I took him out on tour as a guitar tech for TRIBE AFTER TRIBE on the SAIGON KICK tour……..after the initial gear hurdles, it turned out to be a great day……….

GET BETTER ALAN……!

APRIL 2011……

Once again it had been a while since I wrote……been very busy with Bayou City Sound, Bright Star Productions, LD Systems here in Houston and also a few gigs mixing the band SKYROCKET…….

The talent in this region of the country is second to none…..great bands, great songwriting, and great original music…….I only wish that the production in this area of the country and the gear at many of the venues and events would catch up with the talent…….1989 called and they want their tired worn out gear back…!!……I seem to be doing a ton of troubleshooting on the show sites all the time just to get the rigs to function properly……SIGH……!!

I also mixed SKYROCKET at the Houston Society of the Performing Arts fundraiser gala in the Lobby of the prestigious Wortham Center in downtown Houston on the Meyer Melodie mini line array rig…….it seems that after the gig I am now the Society of the Performing Arts newest favorite FOH engineer…..

It also looks like I will be working for LD Systems at the 2011 Houston International Festival in Downtown Houston…….
