For Decades, myself and just about every Audio Engineer I know or have ever run across has been using the Sony MDR-7506 Studio Monitor Headphones……they always had a good flat frequency response, folded up nicely and were fairly portable, and had decent isolation and a nice affordable $99 price tag…….but in the last many years, the quality of the build of these tried and true headphones has really went down hill……the black ear cushion foam covering always flakes off all over your face if you are not clean shaven, and worse yet, if you remove the headphones from one side quickly, the entire earcushion comes off the far side of the headphones and then is a HUGE pain in the ass to get it back on…….and once you do they will never stay on again for very long ever again……..thus I have been on a search for a worthy replacement for a set of headphones that has all, if not more, of the features that I am all of us Audio People always liked about our old trusted Sony Headphones with none of the pitfalls that they now seem to have (Shame on you SONY)……
For more than a year I looked and sampled and tried several Brands and types of Headphones, and NONE of them passed my tests and abuse and Criteria……..
BUT……then recently, I think I finally found the Worthy Replacement for the Old Sony Standby’s……
THEY ARE…….The HEIL Sound Pro Set 3 Headphones……

AND THE BEST PART……..They do NOT have that Stupid Low End OOMPH internal Boost that so many of those “So Called” quality headphones out there these days have……like the completely stupid and over priced BEATS by Dr. Dre piles of Crap Headphones do…….
Friday I got a text message from Todd at MSI asking me if I was interested in possibly Doing Stage Monitors for DRAKE for his Summer U.S. Tour……..Of course I fired off my Resume as fast as I could………Here is keeping my fingers crossed anyway…….and even if I do not get the Position, it sure was nice to be Nominated and have Todd and MSI think of me……..I am of course more than ready to hit the road again this Summer with someone……..and of Course today I got my copy of Live Design Magazine in the mail and low and behold…..who is on the cover?…..DRAKE……….Will it be the DRAKE and BLAKE Show this summer?………
It’s Wednesday, and I am back in Houston after spending most of last week in Austin, TX at the TAF&E convention doing monitors for all the showcase acts (10 acts to be exact) on a 24 channel Presonus Studiolive digital console with my iPad….I must say it worked really well….. Ate some great food while I was there too….but today I find myself sitting presently on a cold cement bench outside of the Houston, TX House of Blues with my iPhone where I am doing the hurry up and wait for the load-in with SKYROCKET…. We are here on the main stage tonight for a private party and then back here Friday and Saturday as well…..I arrived early with the hopes of getting my hands on the Soundcraft Vi6 digital console at FOH a little early….but alas I am the first one here……….guess I will just have to chill until the scheduled 3PM load-in…..
Myself along with Bayou City Sound…….Last year at SXSW we had the rocking Turbosound rig with all the Digidesign Consoles inside the Club LATITUDE 30 there in Austin for the British Music Embassy Shows. We have that same system available as well as smaller systems with either analog mixing consoles or the new Presonus digital consoles with the iPad Mixing interfaces (so there would be no need for a FOH position or pulling a snake) and we also have larger SoundBridge and JBL Vertec Line Array systems available for larger indoor or outdoor events as well…….Consoles, Monitor Systems, whatever you need to make your acts at this years SXSW sound GREAT !! Contact me/us here or you can e-mail me at email@example.com or call me at (702) 480-6932……
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
“.. almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”
STEVE JOBS, 2005
Steve Jobs gave these quotes I have posted above several years ago at a college graduation speech he made…….In my opinion, they are easily some of the most profound, honest, important and enlightening words ever spoken by just about anyone….
I have several local shows over the next two weeks that I really have very few details about as of this moment…..two days in Stafford, TX this weekend and then back here in Houston next weekend……but for the last week of May and over the Memorial Day Weekend, I will be in Louisville, KY for nearly 10 days for the ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER Festival which is celebrating their 10th year anniversary as the World’s largest Beatles band festival…….Beatles Tribute acts from all over the world will be appearing for 7 days straight and I will be there working for LP Productions doing audio on several of the stages mixing FOH and Monitors throughout the week long event….
I keep getting the mix and hear this band from Austin, Texas / Louisana called MINGO FISHTRAP……..THEY ARE KILLER…!!…….great soul and blues and funk and R&B…….with a very rootsy edge…….great horn section too…….check them out online……Google MINGO FISHTRAP..!!
At the end of day one of the Houston 2011 I-Fest, we of course covered all the gear in plastic to protect it from possible rain or morning dew moisture…….so on day two, of the Houston 2011 I-Fest, I showed up about 90 minutes earlier than I was scheduled too to uncover the gear and check the system providing me some extra time to get everything in order before the days bands started to show up……I got the rig uncovered, and the mics put back out on the stands by 8:30 AM…….THEN MY CELL PHONE RANG……..
It was Kat Harris with LD Systems who was heading up the production tent on the show sites that was overseeing all the festival stages……..Her first question for me……”How well do you know the Yamaha PM5D Digital Console?”……. I informed her that I knew it well, and she then informed me that they had carted off Alan Van Dyke in an ambulance from FOH of the World Stage (the main festival stage) who had went into diabetic shock……..so she was now moving me off the monitor desk of the Louisiana Stage and was putting me at FOH of the World Stage…….so off I went……
Once I arrived at the main festival stage, Jack at the monitor desk brought me up to speed quickly and I went out to FOH……
I ended up mixing FOH for the first act (some Indian act that was very interesting with all the exotic acoustic instruments)……..then I ended up giving a ton of PM5D Digital Console lessons for the engineer of the second act who had never used the desk before…….he did a great job with my help and his great act from Uzbekistan with a ton of world class performers and instrumentalists sounded amazing……..
Then of course we really got the stage and the festival rockin with an amazing set from blues man KEB MOE……I was completely blown away by his set…….great blues numbers with slot of really humorous songs…….
Then…..blues great ROBERT CRAY hit the stage and he really had the crowd in the palm of his hands during his incredible set…….then we got Usama Bin Ladin…….what a great day……..me at FOH on the LD Systems big rig on the main stage of the I-Fest, great music, big crowds, great people watching……AND we got Bin Ladin……..it was a fantastic day…….it does not get much better than that………..
