The Vegas Heat is on….And so are the Shows…..

So last Friday it finally topped 100 degrees outside here in Vegas……..set up the 3G Productions D&B Audio rig at the Mandalay Beach Pool Stage that evening in prep for the BOZ SCAGGS show for the following night…….

Saturday arrived and it topped out at 108 degrees during the BOZ SCAGGS Soundcheck…….later that evening BOZ SCAGGS put on a great show…….the Monitor Rig and the crew were a bunch of guys from Sound Image (Nashville and San Diego) including the FOH engineer with Steely Dan…..yet I, for the life of me, cannot remember his name………I have been on a bunch of shows on this rig with every digital console in the book, but when this guy showed up with an Analog Midas Heritage 3000 console, the first thing I noticed was how much better the rig sounded……….and at the end of the night I let him know and he thanked me for my words………he told me that every time he hears comments like mine from people, he feels justified, carrying the Big Analog desk around………and honestly….I know exactly how he feels…….the big analog desks just sound better than digital…….plain and simple…….

Tomorrow is INFOCOMM at the Convention Center here in Vegas……..one of my industry’s trade shows…….I will be on the exhibit floor all day networking with my peers and industry people and checking out the new toys……..I am sure its gonna be hot outside and i will have to park a mile away and spend a fortune to park close…….

Then late today……Only 104 degrees outside……..I got a call from Cory Harrington from PRG and was told to call Kevin over at Feelgood’s Nightclub here in Vegas…..I called him and left a message……….about an hour later, Kevin called me back and ask me if I was available this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday…….and strangly enough, I am………So tomorrow night I am going to meet with Kevin at the club and get the low down as to what they need me for this coming weekend……but it sounds like I might be doing some work with them this weekend and possible alot more in the future…….I do know that TAPROOT is playing there at Feelgood’s the coming Saturday night…….

Suddenly I am Completely Slammed….

After a slow March and April, suddenly the work is coming fast and often…….lots of touring offers in the e-mail inbox and locally here in Vegas, I am having a hard time being in more than one place at a time…….

Wednesday, May 12th

I was on Fremont Street in Downtown Vegas doing Monitors for JEFFERSON STARSHIP……..Paul Kantner can still do it and Cathy Richardson on Vocals belted it out……..The New Shubert Systems Clair Brothers Monitor rig that HAS Productions provided me rocked and no one was left wanting for Vocals……..Thanks Larry and Dave!

Thursday, May 13th

Loaded out some Giant Corporate Show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena………..and let me tell you……..we tore down the entire arena faster than we loaded one (1) of the five (5) 53′ truck trailers because the MGM Grand Garden Arena has NO Loading docks……..(Major design flaw)………It completely sucked and the corporate guys have no plan for a truck pack….they always make it up as they go and having to fork lift everything into the trucks took hours…….

Friday, May 14th

5AM at the Mandalay Bay Events Center / Pool……..Why am I awake at all and why am I the only person here?………OOps……..I got e-mailed the wrong info (thus I am in the wrong place) and I just found out I should be in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center to load in and set up Audio for OSA (On Stage Audio) with Brian Daily for some corporate show………..I am Dog tired after last nights load out at the MGM……..

Saturday, May 15th

On the Yamaha PM5D digital console at the Suncoast Showroom doing Monitors for the local Band ENVY……this band is pretty good…….and Katie the Lead Vocalist is smokin hot………and man oh man she wears some outrageous clothes or lack their of…..the kind of clothes that only 2% of the women on the planet can get away with wearing……..its must be big fun shopping for clothes with her I would imagine…….

Monday, May 17th

Set up the D&B Audio rig for 3G Productions at the Mandalay Bay Beach Pool Stage for Tomorrow’s Corporate Show with MAROON 5……..

Today, Tuesday, May 18th

MAROON 5 at the Mandalay Bay Beach Pool Stage……..They have all their own people……should be alot of standing around until the out I am guessing……..I will take some pictures and post them later…..

Later this week……..

More Vegas Freelance-A-Go-Go….

Last Friday I was at The Mandalay Bay Events Center flying audio and giant video screens for the overflow from the MGM Grand Garden Arena for last Saturday night’s Mayweather/Mosley Boxing Match…….I knew Mayweather would win…..Mosley is a Puncher…….but Mayweather is a boxer and has probably the fastest stick and move jab of all time…….I guess I should have placed a bet…..but I didn’t…….

Last Saturday I was at the Sunset Station amphitheater for the “People Are Crazy Musicfest” featuring Country Artists, Billy Currington, David Nail, and Mark Wills……The audio rig was from PRG (Production Resource Group) and they brought out the VDOSC rig with a several Yamaha PM5D Consoles and some of the L’Acoustic monitor wedges……..was a long day but everything went well…….below are some picture from throughout the after noon during the soundchecks I took with my Iphone………you can click on the Images to see the full sized pictures…….

This coming weekend, I will be back at The Orleans Showroom on the Monitor Desk doing the Monitors for the legendary R&B group “The Four Tops” for 4 nights, Thursday thru Sunday……..

Everyone calls at once…….

So last night and tonight and Sunday night I am on the Monitor Desk at the Orleans Showroom again……..some Guy fairly new to Vegas doing his Vegas schtick named Perry Danos………..a 16 piece band with Strings and a Horn Section, Bass, Guitar, Drums, Back-up Vocals, Grand Piano and keys……..Not a bad show, but at the same time just more Vegas Schtick…..YAWN………

And of course after I took this gig on Tuesday, everyone else called me at the Last Minute on Thursday……..Got a call from My buddies Dave Tennant and Twin (of the infamous Sherrod brothers) from HAS Productions First……Twin was looking for someone to drive a Yamaha M7CL console in Beaumont, CA over the weekend, and, of course I had to turn that down as I was already booked……..then of course 10 Minutes Later Brian Larson from PRG (Production Resource Group) called with some Corporate Gig for Saturday that of course I had to turn down as well……….I need a clone so I can cover all the gigs at once……HEY EVERYONE……..NEXT WEEK MY SCHEDULE IS WIDE OPEN…….It will be interesting to see who will win the phone call race for next week……..it would be awesome if everyone would book my services 10 days to 3 to 4 weeks out…….Hint Hint!!

A Nasty NAB moment at the Planet Hollywood Hotel in Vegas…..

Last weekend, I did a Corporate for PRG (Production Resource Group) at Planet Hollywood for Panasonic and their NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) event……..everything went smooth and well for all involved aside from the entire crew being stuck in the Freight Elevator for 90 minutes on the load in when it malfunctioned with all of us in it, and then myself being locked in stairwell during the load out for a time only to discover, a pair of boxer shorts and the pile of human feces and the used condoms on the stairwell floor while I waited for security to rescue me…..”nasty” did not even come close to describing the scene……..LOL……too much information??????…….Anyway that was Thursday and Saturday…….in Between, on Friday night I did some work with extra Backline for the Alicia Keys show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center……Alicia looks even better up close than she does in pictures and on TV……….it was a really good show…….

Freelance-A-Go Go…….

Once again I know it has been far too long since I have written and I am going to try to start writing a couple of times a week from now on……..BUT……I just have been Crazy Busy…….

It seemed that Freelancing was going to be an up hill battle this past year due to the slow down in the economy and the Audio Production Industry as a whole…….but I for one have not really had any slow down at all……..Here is what I have been up to lately:

11/20 to 11/22

Monitors at The Orleans Showroom in Las Vegas for THE FOUR TOPS and their 10 piece band. 10 Floor Mixes and Stereo Sidefills………This has been several weeks in a row doing monitors in The Orleans Showroom…….It’s an older House rig, but I have decided it sounds great……There is a 48 Channel Yamaha PM4000M with Klark EQ’s and Klark and ETA Speaker Management systems pushing QSC Amps and Older EAW Wedges and Sidefills. The rig is smooth sounding and the system is very responsive.

11/17

Dragged 3 bands worth of Backline Musical instruments to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to The Joint Showroom and a side room here is Vegas for some Corporate event for PRG (Production Resource Group)………delivered the gear and set it up and then stood around for 11 hours getting paid and watched the Kansas Jayhawks Basketball Game in the Casino Sports Book Until it was time to Load it out……….

11/12 to 11/15

Four Nights Doing Monitors at The Orleans Showroom with NEIL SEDAKA……..Lots of Oldies Hits……..I am running monitors for the band Behind Neil……but for some reason Neil’s FOH Guy is running Neil’s monitor Mixes around him and his Piano from FOH……….strangely enough, his 2 monitors are hanging feedback at 125 Hz, and making Neil crazy……..Of course my 12 monitor mixes are not feeding back….Nothing I can do but call him on the Clear Com…..Check out the picture of Neil’s Piano Below…….

11/10 to 11/11

Two days of Local Talent Show rehearsal’s and then the show at the Orleans Showroom here in Vegas. Lots of RF Vocals, Tons of Playback (over and over and over) and a lots of Choreography (Fosse, Fosse, Fosse), with singing and magic acts……

11/5 to 11/8

GREAT GIG ALERT !! Four GREAT nights with THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS doing their Monitors at The Orleans Showroom. 3 Monitor Mixes and Stereo Sidefills. Upright Bass on a Fishman Pick-up/DI and an amazing sounding Martin Acoustic Guitar thru a DI……….add two SM 58 vocal mics and two funny guys with funny stories and silly songs, and that equals a GREAT GIG !!……It was Big Fun with plenty of laughs……the Legendary Smothers Brothers………LOL……..Of course it was not Original Smothers Brothers……They died in 1969 when they were on CBS……..terrible plane crash…….apparently one of them wasn’t a pilot……..?????…….You just had to be there I guess…..

11/2 to 11/4

Brian Larson at PRG (Production Resource Group) had me as a FOH/Systems Tech and sent me over to the 2009 SEMA Car Show at the Convention Center here in Vegas.

Day one, we prepped the rig at the Shop…….Two Yamaha PM5D’s Consoles, Clair Brothers Wedges, Kudo’s Side fills with subs with L’Acoustics V-DOSC Mains…….took all day to prep………SIGH!

Day two, showed at the show site outside in the parking lot at the Convention Center next to the Motor Trend Test Track……the track was full of Corvette’s flying around the track…….OH…..and SEMA can pretty be summed up as “Hot Cars and Hot Girls”………But I digress ……….anyway…….as we are outside, we are going to be ground stacking the V-Dosc Rig………Not ideal at all…….(picture below)

Once we got the rig up and running we sound checked and then did the show later in the evening on day two……..It was an Invitation only event for The Ford Motor Corporation with THE REED AND DICKINSON BAND From Detroit. Basically the band is full of a Bunch of the Guys from Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet Band and Kid Rock’s Band…….good straight forward Americana Rock & Roll doing their own originals…..Video Below…..

After the show we packed up everything except the V-DOSC (because the forklift did not show up) and loaded it out…….

Day Three, we came back and rescued the V-DOSC (with the forklift)………

10/23 to 10/25

Rock Show…….!!…..Three Nights with Alice Cooper playing backline tech and working closely with Lorne (Gump) Wheaton (Neil Peart’s Drum Tech). It was a Fun time………But it was also Dangerous Stage Hand Weekend………Alice still puts on a “Complete” rock show……Great stuff!!….Picture below!!

10/22

Set Up the rig for Tim McGraw…….V-DOSC Flown……..6 hours in and out…………show tomorrow night….out the door……(pic of rig below)

SO……..as you can see, I have been MORE than busy……and of course I only mentioned the Highlights of what I have been up to lately……..there was of course others things tike Corporate non-sense and Lounge shows around town as well in-between all that stuff…….

Special Thanks to all the guys that have been keeping me busy lately also……Brian, Joey, Cory, Greg and Super Dave at PRG and Bill Fleming at Desert Entertainment!

Oh and I just got my new passport too……..I am dreaming of some exotic overseas Vanessa Williams Gig……..

Doing the Freelance A-Go Go………
